Angela Karasti

Angela Karasti started volunteering in the two year old class for Journey Kids in November of 2011. She learned about Journey Kids when she signed up her three children for classes. At first, she became involved because her youngest son was nervous about going to class by himself. She figured that helping out in his classroom was a good way to help him adjust, and she also felt that as a parent she should help to share the responsibilities of the church giving time to help with the kids.

The more that Angela went to help out with her son’s class, the more she fell in love with the two year olds. She especially enjoys getting to know each of their distinct, funny, and lovable personalities. Every week, she tries to find new and exciting things to do with the kids in her class, and different games that they can play. It is really rewarding for Angela to have the opportunity to see her once shy son begin to come out of his shell and interact with kids his own age.

There are so many wonderful stories about her volunteering experience that Angela has a hard time listing just one. A special story that comes to mind was right when Angela first started helping out with Journey Kids. There were two kids who cried every time they got dropped off--a little girl and a little boy. The boy’s mom had to put him over the gate every week kicking and screaming. After coming to class and getting to know the teachers and the other children, the little boy now walks into class smiling and jumps right into playing with the other kids. The little girl is so excited now to come to class that she talks about in constantly in the car on the way to church. Angela says, “It’s really cool that we can make the kids feel comfortable, and have an influence on how they feel about coming to God’s house.”

In her spare time, Angela likes to read, go for walks, and make incredible sculptures out of Play-doh. Her advice for someone considering volunteering for Journey Kids is to just jump in and try it--and keep in mind that two year olds behave better in a buggy with special incentives than they do holding on to a rope!

Questions

Why should I serve?

God gives us interests and skills that when put to use, enable us to make a real difference in our church, community and world. And when we serve, we find community, an opportunity to be with others and joy in following Christ’s example.

Children’s ministry is a “Team Sport”!  When Jesus was on the earth he started the church as found in the book of Acts.  Out of all the ways he could have set it up, he chose a team structure.  Church was never meant to be run by just a few.  It was meant to be teams of ministry volunteers working together and using their God given talents to help kids make friends with God and with each other!

Does Journey Kids Ministry really need me to volunteer?

ABSOLUTELY! While we understand that many people think their serving won’t make a difference, the truth is we need your help. Part of a balanced Christian life is serving, so jump in and start serving the Lord at Journey Kids!

How do I find out what volunteer opportunities are available?

The best place to start is the List of Volunteer Opportunities. You can also contact our office at 262.694.3300 ext 1050. To discover what your giftings are, fill out the online Spiritual Gift Assessment.

How do I begin serving?

The first step is to fill out an application. The application can be mailed or turned into the church office during the week, or handed in at Information during the weekend services. Please mark the envelope attention Alicia Johnson.  This is followed by an orientation meeting with the Children Ministry staff. In this meeting, we talk about the ministry as a whole and where you feel called to serve.

What is expected of me?

Expectations vary from role to role. There is a process in place to ensure you are appropriately equipped and trained. The most important thing you can do is show up at the appointed time. Should you ever have any questions about what is expected of you, be sure to talk with your team leader. Open communication is the best method to be sure the serving opportunity is a good fit for both you and the ministry.

What is the time commitment?

The great news is that you can tailor your serving to fit your schedule and your season of life! There are serving opportunities available around the weekend services as well as throughout the week.
